The vineyard at Château d'Ardennes spreads
over approximately 160 acres (63,5 ha), south of the village of Illats, some 35
km (20 miles) south-east of Bordeaux. The soil is composed of 2/3 deep gravel
originated in the Pyrenean glaciers during the tertiary period and 1/3 of clay
and chalk sediments. The vineyard is facing south south-east for a better
airing of the vinerows after the rainfalls so as to limit the hazards related
to fungal diseases before harvesting time begins. The gravel hillocks are 42 m
high and provide the vineyard with the best natural draining. The vinetrees are
on average 35 years of age
